And I Quote . org

Active project

It was time for a decent quote server.

Users can manage their own collection of quotes and, through an API, can get the quotes on their own website.

Adding JSON feeds

In April 2017, besides the already existing RSS feeds, JSON feeds were added, as well.

Rebuild

In September 2018, the site was completely rebuilt.

A cleanup

In February 2023, And I Quote . org stopped posting to Facebook and started posting to Mastodon. The Twitter feed remains active.

As your desktop background

In August 2023, I discovered Plash, an app that allows setting any website as your desktop background (on MacOS). I added a user-changeable setting to set the refresh rate of quotes. Meanwhile, tapping the background image hides some interface elements. So, as a consequence, the website can now function beautifully as the background of your MacOS desktop.

A near-death

From the very beginning, this app used some clever mechanics, utilising the Flickr API, to match quotes with related images. In late 2024, Flickr started to enforce API limits, and another project of mine, LoremFlickr, ended up being blocked. Without ever notifying me, Flickr followed this up by blocking all my projects using the Flickr API, and I had to device an alternative.

Now, each quote is passed through an algorithm, which then creates a randomised, but consistent, colourful background.
